Rod ends and Heim joints are sized by three primary dimensions — bore diameter, thread diameter, and ball width — specified in one of two systems depending on the market and application: inch (UNF) or metric. Getting the right size isn’t just about matching a bolt diameter; thread pitch, oversized-shank conventions, and the specific standard governing the part all factor into whether a given size is actually correct for an application.
How Sizing Is Named
A rod end’s stated size describes three things at once:
- Bore size — the internal diameter of the ball, where the mounting bolt passes through.
- Thread size — the diameter and pitch of the threaded shank. In most rod ends the thread size matches the bore size, but “oversized” joints deliberately use a larger thread than bore — for example, a 5/8″ bore with a 3/4″ thread — to add strength at the shank without increasing the ball/bore diameter.
- Ball width — the thickness of the spherical ball, which determines the bracket or fork spacing the installation needs.
Governing Standards
Rod end dimensions aren’t arbitrary — SAE J1120 (inch series) and ISO 12240-4 (metric series) are the standards that keep dimensions consistent enough for interchangeability between manufacturers building to the same nominal size.
Inch Series: Common Sizes by Application
Inch-sized rod ends use UNF (Unified Fine) threads almost exclusively where precision matters. Common sizes cluster by application:
- Steering linkages — 5/8″-18 and 3/4″-16 are the sizes most frequently specified.
- Heavy 4-link suspension — 7/8″-14 and 1-1/4″-12 are the sizes generally used where the higher load path justifies the larger shank.
Metric Series: Common Range
Metric rod ends are popular on European and Asian machinery, with the practical range running from about M6×1.0 for small linkages up to M20×1.5 for heavy-duty suspension components.
3/4″-16 vs. 7/8″-14: A Direct Comparison
These are two distinct UNF standards, not two sizes of the same hardware — a 3/4″-16 nut will not fit a 7/8″-14 shank, and there’s no partial compatibility to work around:

Choosing between them comes down to more than raw diameter. 3/4″-16 is the right call when it matches existing hardware already on hand, when a smaller overall shank and hole diameter is needed for space or weight reasons, or when the application’s load doesn’t require the extra cross-section the larger size provides. 7/8″-14 is the right call when it matches existing hardware, when a more robust shank with additional strength margin is wanted, or when the assembly genuinely sees higher loads that benefit from it. Don’t try to match the two by “close enough” diameter — confirm the exact standard already in use on the mating hardware before ordering.
Metric M16: A Common European UTV Option, Not “The” Standard
M16 rod ends show up often in European UTV steering and suspension applications, but calling M16 “the standard” overstates it — replacement UTV steering components are sold in both M14 and M16 configurations depending on the specific model, and the correct spec can vary even within a single model family. M16 alone also isn’t a complete specification: M16×2.0 and M16×1.5 are both commercially available pitch variants, and they are not interchangeable with each other. The larger thread section does give an M16 rod end more load-bearing contact area than a smaller size at the same design, which is why it’s a reasonable default for steering and suspension linkages where strength and adjustability both matter — but “European” doesn’t automatically mean M16. Confirm the actual thread spec for the specific vehicle before ordering.
