Heim Joint vs. Rod End vs. Rose Joint

Heim joint, rod end, rose joint, spherical rod end, rod end bearing — five names for the same part. Where each term comes from and what actually matters when specifying one.

There is no mechanical difference between a Heim joint, a rod end, a rose joint, a spherical rod end, and a rod end bearing — they are five names for the same part: a spherical ball captured inside a housing, mounted on a threaded shank. The differences between the names are regional and historical, not technical, and knowing where each one came from helps explain why a supplier catalog in the US, the UK, and Germany can describe an identical part three different ways.

Both “Heim joint” and “Rose joint” are examples of a brand name becoming the generic term for a product category — the same pattern that turned “Kleenex” into a synonym for facial tissue. That’s worth knowing because it means the brand name tells you nothing reliable about who actually manufactured a specific part; a “Heim joint” bought today is almost never made by the original Heim Company.

Does the Name Tell You the Thread Type?

There’s a loose regional tendency — not a rule — that “Rose joint” listings skew toward metric (ISO) threads, since UK and European catalogs default to metric, while “Heim joint” listings skew toward inch UNF/UNC threads (SAE convention), reflecting the US market they’re most associated with. This tendency is real enough to be a useful first guess, but it is not reliable enough to specify a part by. Thread pitch, diameter, and hand (left vs. right) vary by individual product line regardless of which of the five names a catalog uses, so the actual spec sheet — not the name on the listing — should always be the basis for ordering or replacing a part.

What actually matters when specifying a part

Whichever name a supplier uses, the part is only correctly specified by: thread size and pitch, thread hand (left- or right-hand), shank length, ball diameter, and material/liner combination.
